Environmental Policy

PSI uses green IT hardware, has applied a travel policy and uses combined heat and power generation at its own Aschaffenburg facilities.

In 2016 PSI has conducted an energy audit in accordance with EN 16247-1 to evaluate energy flows and potential improvements in energy efficiency.

PSI software solutions help customers in the energy industry and in the production sector to use energy, raw materials and human resources in a responsible and sustainable way.

Examples are the optimisation of energy consumption in the steel and aluminium industry as well as additional network control system functions for the better integration of renewable energies into the energy mix.

Environmental Management System

As PSI as a service provider does not produce physical goods, PSI's business processes only have a marginal effect on environment and resources. Nevertheless, all employees are called upon to use natural resources carefully and to comply with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 14001. The use of natural resources at PSI is essentially limited to:

  • Use of consumables in the office (paper, ink, etc.)
  • Use of energy (electricity, heating) and water in the office buildings
  • Use of transport during travel (see travel expenses directive)

The implementation of environmental man-agement is currently being demonstrated by external energy audits and the participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project. A certification according to DIN EN ISO 14001 is in preparation.

Carbon Disclosure Project

PSI is participating in the Carbon Disclosure Project since 2011 and has significantly improved the score since then.

Products and Services

For 50 years, PSI has been helping customers in the energy industry and in energy-intensive industries by providing software solutions to increase efficiency and use energy, raw materials and labor responsibly. As a result, PSI production management systems for the steel and aluminum industry have functions which help to avoid consumption peaks by predicting energy consumption for all production stages. This means that energy use can be optimized. They also support the reuse of energy amounts released during production using special functions and optimizations methods. PSI solutions for automotive production use advanced fuzzy logic to optimize the sequence in production, taking in account conflicts between different objectives and by that increasing productivity by 8 to 10 %.

PSI’s control systems for managing major electricity grids have been and still are continuously expanded with functions for intelligent management of the feed-in of renewable energy. This includes functions such as safety calculations, thermal overhead line monitoring, bottleneck, generation and infeed management as well as automated network management with a self-learning system that can be used as a network autopilot. PSI is continuously working with energy utilities and researchers to develop intelligent energy supply infrastructures for the future. This includes new products for virtual power plants and smart micro grids.

PSI gas management systems enable optimum control of the compressor stations needed for network operations, and minimise losses due to technical causes. Leak detection and localisation systems contribute to reducing losses during gas and oil transport over large distances and to preventing environmental damages. By storing surplus energy using electrolysis and methanation gas contributes positively to the energy transition.

In Logistics and Traffic in the past years, PSI has developed new solutions for the dynamic control and operation of optimised logistics networks which help to save up to 10% transport costs and emissions. Other functions include energy-optimised rail traffic and a depot management system with route and fueling optimization, as well as range management and charging management for electric buses. This allows us to effectively support customers in reducing greenhouse gases and saving energy.

At the German Mobility Awards, the PSIroads MDS product was recognised as a beacon project for intelligent mobility in 2017. The LINDA research project, in which PSI and its partners developed a concept for the emergency power supply with renewable energies in the event of a blackout, was awarded the Bavarian Energy Prize in 2018.

PSI is not involved in adult entertainment products, alcohol products, controversial weapons, firearms, fur and special leather production, gambling products or services, genetically modified organisms, military contracting, nuclear power generation, nuclear power related services, pesticides and tobacco products.

PSI was awarded the DZ Bank seal of approval for sustainability since 2014.
