Research project on AI-based online traffic optimization successfully launched

Munich, September 20, 2019 – The KIBO-NUM research project on KI-based online traffic optimization for sustainable urban mobility has got off to a successful start. The aim of the project partners Urban Mobility Innovations, PSI FLS Fuzzy Logik & Neuro Systeme GmbH, PSI Mines&Roads GmbH and the city of Rosenheim as associated partner is the joint creation of a solution for the management of traffic flows of cities and municipalities to cope with today's and future traffic problems.

The KIBO-NUM project, which was launched in April 2019, will run for two years and is funded as part of the "Information and Communication Technology" R&D program of the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy.

In KIBO-NUM, current, practical tasks of cities and municipalities in relation to existing traffic problems are taken up and suitable solution methods and concepts are researched or developed. In particular, methods of artificial intelligence and from the field of “big data” will be applied. The methods will be used to collect and consolidate data on the current traffic situation and to derive forecasts for its further development in the next few minutes and hours. Collective and multi-modal measures for traffic flow optimization, as well as suggestions for individual journeys with a multi-criteria approach are identified and evaluated on this “data carpet”. Multi-criteria, since different views with different requirements and criteria are included in the respective objectives; multimodal, since in addition to motorized individual transport, various other environmentally friendly modes of transport, such as public transport or bicycle transport, are to be included in a holistic transport concept. Information and communication technology and in particular the application of artificial intelligence to increasingly available “urban big data” offer the opportunity for an objectively balanced equilibrium of the interests of road users, citizens and the environment for an overall compatible, ecological and flexible mobility offer of the future.

Urban Mobility Innovations (B2M Software GmbH) is consortium leader and, in the project, integrates the data of the urban systems into an open urban data platform. At the same time, it lays a decisive foundation stone for the digitization of the participating cities towards a Smart City. On the real-time capable cloud-based platform, machine-learning-based algorithms for estimating the traffic situation in road traffic will be researched and implemented for a novel, AI-based forecast of the traffic situation, taking into account parking space data, floating car data and other data sources.

The PSI subsidiaries PSI FLS Fuzzy Logik & Neuro Systeme GmbH and PSI Mines&Roads GmbH take over the tasks in the field of traffic flow optimization (central control and individual travel planning) with their software modules and expert knowledge of the AI-based optimization and decision cores. The main innovation is the linking of the machine learning technology with the proven PSI optimization solution Deep Qualicision KI based on extended fuzzy logic in the field of traffic flow control as well as the transfer of existing concepts for higher-level traffic networks to urban traffic structures.

Besides the prototypical development of the cloud-based system, the approach will be tested in a real environment in order to transfer it later to other medium-sized cities. The city of Rosenheim could be won for this purpose. Rosenheim is a medium-sized city with approx. 65,000 inhabitants and is thus characteristic of a large number of cities and municipalities in Germany. Rosenheim will be available as a test field within the framework of the project and will make it possible to implement measures to influence traffic collectively, for example by integrating traffic computers for traffic light control. A mobile app for individual travel planning will also be tested in Rosenheim.
