DAEDALOS
Development, integration, and demonstration of advanced software tools in SCADA systems for combining Teslas and Edisons world to realize high, medium and low voltage hybrid AC/DC grids.
The project
The development of a Dynamic Security Assessment (DSA)-based decision support tool for network operators in hybrid AC/DC networks is the focus of the project. This innovative tool aims to provide network operators with valuable support in the decision-making within complex hybrid power grids that integrate both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) components. Other focal points of the project include the modularization of SCADA components, which enable flexible and customizable monitoring and control of network operations. Furthermore, novel methods will be developed to use measurement data for estimating system inertia and detecting oscillations, which are crucial for the stability and reliability of the grid.
Another important aspect of the project is the careful examination of the interface between third-party functions and the control system. These tests are necessary to ensure that the integration works smoothly and that the various systems can communicate effectively with each other. Finally, a research and development demonstration of the control system will be developed and presented by PSI Software SE. This demo will serve to vividly showcase the functionalities and benefits of the new system and to illustrate the possibilities that the Decision Support Tool offers to potential users.
Project duration: 09/2024 - 08/2028
Motivation
The energy transition is posing massive challenges to the power system. The power systems including the SCADA system were originally designed for the AC power systems. However, the increase of DC components in the power systems leads to several challenges. The transformation of the AC system to hybrid AC/DC is therefore required. The most critical challenge is to maintain the stability of the power systems.
Accordingly, from the control system vendor perspective, a decision support tool for monitoring and control of voltage, frequency, oscillation, and protection schemes must be developed to ensure the stability of the hybrid AC/DC power systems.
Project goals
- Development of inertia estimation and oscillation detection.
- Demonstration of the observation and operation of hybrid AC/DC networks.
Declining system inertia and increasing inverter-based power generation in the energy transition make an online monitoring of the system states essential. PSI Software SE focuses on the development of a decision support tool based on incoming PMU-data from the field for inertia estimation and detection of low-frequency oscillations during operation, to create visibility and to enable active interventions during critical times. This tool is therefore an important contribution to a safe operation of the power system.
Additionally, the developed advanced software tools within the project will be demonstrated at the Demo Control Center in collaboration with the PSIcontrol - the real SCADA software from PSI Software SE. This makes the project demonstration close to the real control room from the grid operators to enhance the understanding and management of such hybrid AC/DC networks.
Technical solution approach
To tackle the future sustainable power systems, scalability and modularity are a key feature. PSI Software SE focuses on the development of a modular software platform and a decision support tool based on DSA for the hybrid AC/DC power systems. The development considers the practical issues encountering by the grid operators of the TSOs and DSOs. With the expected Technology Readiness Level 7 (TRL 7), the modular platform together with the decision support tool will be tested.
In the project demonstration, the Demo Control Center at PSI Research and Innovation in Dortmund will be connected with the demonstrators of our project partners in Aachen and Barcelona. The developed advanced technology to deal with the arising challenges from the DC components will be presented. Specifically, PSI Software SE will demonstrate the potential operations of the SCADA systems in the hybrid AC/DC power systems.
