Increased Efficiency at MPK Poznań Sets New Standards

PSI has implemented its Depot Management System PSItraffic/DMS for MPK Poznań to optimize scheduling and resource management. The system, now operational in five depots, enhances the efficiency and transparency of the transport company, which carries over 200 million passengers annually. State-of-the-art RFID technology enables precise vehicle location and seamless operations management.

MPK Poznań Sp. z o.o.

With a fleet of more than 270 trams and 320 buses, the municipal transport company MPK Poznań Sp. z o.o. transports over 200 million passengers per year, making it one of the largest transport companies in Poland. Poznań, located on the Warta River, is the fifth largest city in Poland with a population of 560,000. The university city is not only an industrial and commercial center and an important international trade fair location, but also one of the country's cultural centers.

Challenges of the project

The implementation of a modern PSItraffic/DMS generally brings with it a number of challenges, which became particularly clear during the introduction at MPK Poznań. These include, in particular, the optimal use of the available depot space and the efficient management of a large and diverse vehicle fleet.

Overcoming the complexity of portfolio management

The introduction of a modern Depot Management System (DMS) at MPK Poznań was associated with a number of hurdles:

  • Limited space capacity in the depots: The existing depots did not provide enough space for the constantly growing number of vehicles, which made efficient management and maintenance difficult.
  • Managing a large fleet of vehicles: Organizing and coordinating a large number of vehicles required an intelligent solution to optimize operations and minimize downtime.

These challenges made it clear that a modern DMS was essential to meet the requirements of efficient and sustainable public transport.

The customer's goal

MPK Poznań was looking to optimize its operations. They wanted to increase both productivity and transparency throughout the company.

Maximizing efficiency and transparency

In order to increase efficiency and transparency in operations, MPK Poznań has sought to implement a modern depot management system. This system was developed to optimize both vehicle and personnel scheduling and thus ensure smooth operations throughout the depot.

By precisely modeling operational processes, the system enables predictive planning and efficient execution of maintenance and supply work. At the same time, drivers benefit from direct access to up-to-date information regarding their shifts and the locations of the vehicles assigned to them. This holistic solution helps to maximize productivity while promoting transparent communication within the company.

The approach

The solution was to implement a central depot management system. This system was to transparently display and optimize the operating processes.

Introduction of PSItraffic/DMS

In order to raise operational efficiency and transparency to a new level, MPK Poznań decided to introduce the innovative PSItraffic/DMS depot management system from PSI. This state-of-the-art system digitally maps all processes at the depot, providing a complete overview and control.

At the heart of the system is the powerful optimization algorithm Qualicision, which allocates parking spaces in real time, identifies potential conflicts at an early stage and generates precise occupancy plans. The use of state-of-the-art RFID technology (Radio-Frequency Identification) ensures precise vehicle identification and tracking without having to interfere with the vehicles' electrical systems.

Software used

The comprehensive components and systems enable flexible and efficient management of vehicle fleets, ensure continuous monitoring and adaptation of operating processes, and contribute to optimized use of infrastructure.

  • Depot and vehicle management system: PSItraffic/DMS
  • RFID technology: precise vehicle location
  • Point control systems and electronic display panels: part of the integrated communication and information systems
  • Network infrastructure and vehicle identification and tracking systems: safe and efficient operations management
  • Qualicision algorithm: real-time allocation of parking spaces

The implementation

The DMS was introduced in a step-by-step and targeted manner. It began at the Franowo tram depot, followed by the expansion to four other depots.

Seamless implementation and expansion

Following the successful implementation in the Franowo streetcar depot, PSItraffic/DMS was systematically expanded to four other MPK Poznań depots, including bus depots. This expansion included not only the implementation of the software, but also the installation of state-of-the-art hardware components such as points control systems, electronic display panels and advanced communication systems.

In addition, a high-performance network infrastructure was created that was seamlessly integrated with the vehicle identification and tracking system. This holistic solution ensures smooth operations and enables MPK Poznań to take full advantage of PSItraffic/DMS.

The result

The new DMS has significantly improved the operating procedures at MPK Poznań. The centralized management enables optimal availability of personnel and vehicles.

Increased efficiency and improved transparency

The introduction of PSItraffic/DMS has significantly increased the efficiency and transparency of operational processes. The centralized management of the five depots ensures optimal availability of personnel and vehicles. With a fleet of over 270 trams and 320 buses, which carry over 200 million passengers annually, MPK Poznań has further consolidated its position as one of the largest transport companies in Poland.

Significant advantages for the company

  • Centralized management of multiple depots with mixed fleets
  • Manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic dispatching
  • Optimal availability of personnel and vehicles
  • Integrated quality management (reporting)

Taking into account the complexity and the multitude of processes that are automatically managed by the system in the depot, the software enables reliable, safe and punctual streetcar services in Poznan. For us as the operator, the optimal use of the technical infrastructure and the human workforce is also extremely important. This benefits not only our employees, but all streetcar passengers in Poznan.
