Supporting the transformation to decarbonized steel at the site in Luleå
Berlin, January 20, 2026 - SSAB Europe has commissioned PSI Software SE to implement PSImetals as a key component of its Green Steel transformation. The integrated solution for production management will support the digitalization and automation of SSAB’s mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden, forming the foundation for a future production management landscape.
Based on a comprehensive design phase started in 2024, the implementation includes modules PSImetals Planning, Scheduling, Quality, Production, Logistics, and fully integrated Level-4 and Level-2 communication. At the Luleå site, the system will manage all production areas of the mini-mill, such as electric arc furnace, compact strip production, cold rolling mill, and surface treatment lines, supporting the production of hot-rolled and cold-rolled coil.
A major objective of the project is to establish a scalable digital template that will guide SSAB’s broader renewal efforts. By implementing modern workflows and harmonized tools, the Nordic and US-based steel company aims to reduce redundant manual efforts, streamline integration, and achieve significant scale advantages across sites. The project will ensure that new business processes and IT systems are fully ready for the launch of the mini-mill, which is planned for 2029.
The solution will also drive a step change in process efficiency by deploying automated Greenfield processes and best-practice standard functionality. This highly integrated and automated platform will support stable operations, improved planning accuracy, consistent quality management, and end-to-end logistics coordination.
This PSImetals implementation supports our ambition to be the first large-scale producer of decarbonized steel. The transformation program in Luleå is expected to reduce Sweden’s national CO₂ emissions by 7 percent annually while establishing the operating models, business processes, and digital systems required to enable the Nordic transformation
SSAB is a global steel company with a leading position in high-strength steels and related services. With two unique decarbonized steels, SSAB is revolutionizing steelmaking and aims to largely eliminating carbon dioxide emissions from its own operations. In Oxelösund the goal is to start production of steel without carbon emissions, based on recycled steel and sponge iron, in early 2027.
