Ensuring broader digitalization and sustainability strategy
Berlin, November 17, 2025 – Tata Steel Nederland BV has successfully implemented PSImetals Production and Quality Execution at its IJmuiden steel plant as part of the Smart Steel Factory project. This strategic move is a further step in the company's journey to become a greener, cleaner, and circular steel company.
The new system provides optimal support for qualifying batches and slabs, ensuring stringent quality control across the oxygen converter, secondary metallurgy, and continuous casting plants. With PSImetals, Tata Steel Nederland can meet strict metallurgical standards more efficiently. The function for controlling quality deviations improves employee decision-making and enables faster, more confident actions as well as recommendation of feasible alternative quality grades.
Crucially, this implementation supports Tata Steel Nederland’s sustainability goals (Green Steel Plan | Tata Steel). With intelligent reclassifications and optimized melting, PSImetals contributes directly to a more circular and resource-efficient operation by preventing or reducing the production of incorrect material, which has to be downgraded to scrap, while maintaining high quality.
The deployment of heat and slab qualification is a significant strategic advantage, as the entire IJmuiden steel plant is now running on the modern, integrated PSI system. This unification will make the future transition to new, green steel installations such as Direct Reduced Iron Plant significantly easier and faster.
This steelmaking go-live project is part of Tata Steel Nederland’s broader strategy of digitalization and sustainability.
