Automated and cloud-based operation of low-voltage grids

Berlin, August 21, 2025 – As part of its digitalization strategy, Netze Calw GmbH has awarded PSI Software SE with the delivery of the software solutions PSIconnect, PSIngo, and PSIneplan. The aim is to implement cloud-based grid operation as well as in a step-by-step smartification of the low-voltage grids, fully automated integration of local grid stations and measuring devices. In addition, grid connection requests and distribution grid planning will be handled automatically via PSIneplan.

PSIconnect is a distributed event streaming integration platform that links all data and systems as a central data hub. The Intelligent Grid Operator PSIngo delivers a digital twin of the distribution grid for the grid operator based on the PSIconnect platform. Moreover, the software PSIneplan offers grid simulation and planning.

The project at Netze Calw is divided into four subprojects and will be implemented in steps until 2029. In the first sub-project, the digital twin for the first ten grids in the low-voltage grid area will be developed. In addition to integrating the master and topology data, this includes connecting local grid station and smart meter gateway measurements as well as integrating the control loop for implementing dimming commands in accordance with Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG).

The second part involves consolidating the grid connection requests. In the connection portal of the distribution system operator, the grid connection requests are transferred to PSIneplan via PSIconnect in order to automatically perform the necessary grid compatibility check.

The third part involves implementing the integration of strategic target grid planning. Finally, the fourth sub-project aims to roll out the digitalization of all Calw grids, with controllability in accordance with Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) also to be implemented for some of the grids.

As a regional distribution system operator, Netze Calw GmbH operates the low-voltage electrical grid in the urban area of the large district town of Calw. The company was spun off in 2024 as an independent grid company in the form of a universal succession of the grid and technology division of Energie Calw GmbH. As an innovative, high-performance service provider with strong roots in the region, Netze Calw attaches great importance to excellent customer and service orientation in order to convince them with tailor-made products, individual energy solutions, and optimal personal support in its core divisions of electricity, natural gas, water, heat, and other service products.

The PSI Group develops software products for optimizing the flow of energy and materials for utilities and industry. As an independent software producer with more than 2,300 employees, PSI has been a technology leader since 1969 for process control systems that ensure sustainable energy supply, production and logistics by combining AI methods with industrially proven optimization methods. The innovative industry products can be operated on-premises or in the cloud.
